Mixbook is an online service for creating customizable photo books, calendars and cards. PastBook and Mixbook strive for the same goals and share similar values: we are aiming at preserving your precious memories, giving you the opportunity to relive them in a hardbound book. We decided to create a “Year in Review” photo book with Mixbook to spot the differences and similarities between our services. In case you want to do the same, follow our step-by-step instructions on how to create a Mixbook photo book.
How to create a Mixbook photo book (in 5 steps).
Step 1: Log in.
First of all, you need to create a Mixbook account. Go to Mixbook website – on the top right, you will see buttons “Sign up” – press it if it’s the first time you are creating a photo book. You will be asked to log in with Facebook or email.
Step 2: Choose a theme.
Once you are logged in, you can proceed with choosing the theme. On the top left, you will see a button “Photo Books”: hover your mouse over it and the most popular themes will drop down. Pick one of them or click “View All” to browse all the suggested themes. In order to create a yearbook, press “Year in Review”.
You will be redirected to the page with 9 themes related to yearbooks: “Kraft Year in Review”, “A Year to Remember”, “Vintage Year in Review Book”, “Linen Year in Review”, “Family Yearbook”, “Year in Review”, “Modern Year in Review”, “My Year Magazine”, “Graduation Year in Review”. We went for the most general option – “Year in Review”. After clicking on the icon, you will see a preview of the book’s template and a button “Start book”. Click the button and proceed.
Step 3: Create a book.
You can add photos from multiple sources: your computer, Instagram, Facebook, Flickr, PhotoBucket, Picasa and Smugmug. Click “Facebook” if you want to create a yearbook with your Facebook photos.
From here you can pick any of your Facebook albums and select the photos you want to have in your photo book. In order to select all the photos from one album, click “Select All” button in the bottom right corner and then press “Add selected photos”.
You can proceed with selecting photos from other Facebook albums or minimize the window and start customizing the book. You will see all the photos you preselected earlier on the left side – drop them manually to your book – page after page – or click “Auto Fill” button on the upper left corner. This way Mixbook will automatically insert photos into your book pages in the same order as you imported them to the website.
Step 4: Customize.
Now you can browse your book and make all the necessary customizations. Change the layout, rotate the photos, replace them with other pics, add text and stickers, zoom in and out, apply effects and adjustments – play with all the options to see what fits your project best.
Keep in mind that most of the pages in your photo book are themed with the year’s major holidays and events: for instance, there are pages dedicated to St. Valentine’s Day, Easter, Christmas, etc. Make sure that after Auto Fill you don’t end up with the photos of your dog on St. Valentine’s Day page – carefully check the whole book before printing it out. Click “Preview” button on the top right and flip through the book’s pages to make sure everything looks perfect.
Step 5: Order.
When you are ready, press “Order” button in the top right corner and proceed to the checkout. Here you can pick the size and style of your book and determine how many copies of the book you want.
Before placing an order you can preview the book once again and make all the necessary customizations. When ready, hit the “Add to Cart” button. Keep in mind that shipping is not included in the book’s price and some taxes can be applied.
Mixbook has around 300 different themes to choose from: each theme has a different template which you can customize according to your preferences. Year in Review theme recaps the whole year with pages dedicated to the year’s milestones: from St. Valentine’s Day to Christmas. Be careful with the “Auto Fill” option: it randomly fills in the pages with your photos – you will probably need to replace most of them. Mixbook is great for those who are looking for a professionally-looking personalized photo book and is ready to spend hours (or even days) to finalize the project.
Mixbook offers plenty of different layouts and templates to choose from, you have the full control over your book, all sorts of customizations are available, you can add fun stickers, change backgrounds and add captions using a variety of fonts.
Due to the number of various layouts and templates, it can take days to finalize the project: you want to try all of them before picking the one that suits you best. One of the biggest downsides of the Mixbook photo book is the way pictures are imported: they are not categorized by years (which would make more sense) but by albums. This makes the “Auto Fill” option practically useless – the site can’t guess which photo belongs where.
Mixbook is a great service for those who are intent on – and have the hours to devote to creating – a super-customized album with high-quality pictures. However, the “Year in Review” is definitely not the best option Mixbook has to offer.
